Struma ovarii

Abstract
Ovary is a favorite site of tumor development and the histogenesis of ovarian tumor is obscure. Struma ovarii is one of variety of dermoid cyst in which thyroid tissue must be predominent teratoid element.
Clinically it is regarded as a tumor with no specific significance unless it reveals hyperthyr. oidism or malignant change. Histologically the tumor is totally or mostly composed of thyroid tissue, and the component is detected morphologically, chemically, pharmacolgically and biologically by Plaut, and identified as similar to that of normal tissue.
It is usually encountered in the reproductive age. Hyperthyroidism and malignant change may occur in some reported cases.
Author reported 2 cases of struma ovarii, noted in a 24 and 31 years old women. Neither hyperthroidism nor malignant change is seen at the time of operation. Contralateral ovary is normal in both cases.
